Interview Questions & Answers

1. What is the role of Manufacturing Quality?

Manufacturing Quality focuses on ensuring that products meet defined quality requirements throughout the production process.

The objective is not only to identify defects at final inspection but also to prevent defects at the source by controlling processes, identifying variation, and implementing corrective actions.

2. How would you handle a recurring production defect?

I would first collect defect data and identify the frequency, location, model, shift, machine, operator, and process involved.

Then I would conduct 5 Why or Fishbone analysis to identify the actual root cause. After implementing corrective action, I would monitor the defect trend to confirm that the solution is effective and sustainable.

3. What is the difference between correction and corrective action?

Correction deals with the immediate defective product—for example, sorting or reworking the affected parts.

Corrective action eliminates the root cause so that the defect does not happen again.

A good quality engineer should focus on permanent corrective action rather than repeatedly sorting defective products.

4. What are the 7 QC Tools?

The commonly used tools include:

  • Check Sheet
  • Pareto Chart
  • Cause-and-Effect Diagram
  • Histogram
  • Control Chart
  • Scatter Diagram
  • Stratification / Graphical Analysis

These tools help quality teams make decisions based on actual production data.

5. How would you reduce rejection on a production line?

I would first identify the top rejection contributors using Pareto analysis.

Then I would study the process conditions, machine parameters, raw materials, tooling, operator methods, inspection results, and process capability. After identifying the root cause, I would implement corrective action and monitor rejection trends to verify improvement.

6. What is in-process inspection?

In-process inspection checks critical product and process characteristics during manufacturing, rather than waiting until the end of production.

It helps detect abnormalities early, reducing the possibility of producing large quantities of defective products.

7. How do you handle disagreement with the Production team regarding a quality issue?

I would focus on data and objective evidence rather than personal opinions.

I would demonstrate the defect against the approved drawing, specification, control plan, or inspection standard and work with Production to identify the root cause. The common objective should be to protect quality while maintaining production continuity.

8. What is Poka-Yoke?

Poka-Yoke means mistake-proofing. It is a method of designing a process so that an incorrect operation is prevented or detected immediately.

For example, a fixture may be designed so that a component can only be loaded in the correct orientation.

9. How would you monitor manufacturing quality performance?

I would monitor KPIs such as:

  • Rejection rate
  • Rework rate
  • First Pass Yield
  • Customer complaints
  • Process defects
  • Defect PPM
  • Quality losses
  • Corrective-action closure
  • Process capability

Trend analysis helps identify whether quality is improving or deteriorating.

10. What would you do if a critical defect is found during final inspection?

I would immediately contain the affected vehicles/components and identify the potentially affected production quantity.

Then I would trace the process, investigate the root cause, implement corrective action, and verify the effectiveness before releasing affected products.
