1. What is the role of an SQE?
A Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) is responsible for ensuring that suppliers consistently deliver components meeting defined quality, technical, and delivery requirements.
The role covers supplier selection support, APQP, PPAP, process audits, supplier development, quality problem resolution, CAPA, and continuous improvement.
An effective SQE should focus not only on detecting supplier defects but also on preventing defects at the supplier’s process.
2. What is APQP and why is it important?
Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is a structured approach used to ensure that quality requirements are incorporated throughout new product development.
It helps identify potential risks early and ensures that product and process requirements are understood before mass production.
For an SQE, APQP is particularly important because supplier risks need to be identified and controlled before SOP.
3. What is PPAP?
Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) provides evidence that the supplier understands the engineering requirements and has a capable production process for consistently producing conforming parts.
Depending on the required submission level, PPAP may include documents such as PSW, Process Flow, PFMEA, Control Plan, MSA studies, dimensional results, material results, capability studies, and sample parts.
4. How would you handle a major supplier quality issue?
My first priority would be containment to prevent defective parts from reaching the production line or customer.
I would then establish the problem using data, perform root-cause analysis, implement corrective and preventive actions, and verify their effectiveness.
For repeated or serious issues, I would also review the supplier’s PFMEA, Control Plan, work instructions, process controls, and error-proofing measures.
5. What is the difference between correction, corrective action, and preventive action?
Correction addresses the immediate problem, such as sorting or replacing defective parts.
Corrective action eliminates the root cause of an existing problem.
Preventive action focuses on preventing potential problems from occurring.
For example, sorting defective components is containment/correction, while installing a poka-yoke to eliminate the cause is a stronger corrective measure.
6. How do you perform an 8D analysis?
I would follow a structured approach:
D1: Establish the team
D2: Define the problem

D5: Select permanent corrective action

Supplier process validation confirms that the supplier’s manufacturing process can consistently produce components according to engineering requirements.
This includes checking actual production conditions, equipment, tooling, process parameters, inspection methods, cycle time, capacity, quality controls, and process capability.
10. How would you reduce recurring supplier defects?
I would analyze historical defect data and identify the major recurring problems using Pareto analysis.
Then I would conduct a detailed root-cause investigation and review the supplier’s PFMEA and Control Plan.
Where possible, I would implement robust solutions such as poka-yoke, automated inspection, parameter monitoring, process interlocks, standardized work, and operator training rather than depending solely on additional inspection.
