10 Interview Questions and Answers for AM/DM Buyer Sourcing Job

1. What are the key responsibilities of an automotive buyer?

An automotive buyer is responsible for sourcing components and materials from suitable suppliers while achieving the required targets for cost, quality, delivery, development, and supplier capability.

The buyer works closely with suppliers and internal departments such as engineering, quality, production, logistics, finance, and project management. Responsibilities can include RFQ management, supplier selection, commercial negotiation, price settlement, component development, supplier capacity assessment, and monitoring procurement schedules.

For an AM/DM-level position, the candidate should also demonstrate the ability to analyze commercial information and develop sourcing strategies rather than simply execute purchase orders.

2. How do you select a supplier for an automotive component?

Supplier selection should be based on multiple factors rather than price alone.

Important considerations include:

  • Technical capability
  • Manufacturing capacity
  • Quality performance
  • Delivery capability
  • Cost competitiveness
  • Financial stability
  • Location and logistics
  • Previous automotive experience
  • Development capability
  • Quality systems and process maturity

For a new component, I would evaluate supplier quotations along with technical capability, capacity, quality, logistics, and commercial conditions. A supplier offering the lowest price may not necessarily be the best choice if its quality or delivery capability is weak.

3. What is Zero-Based Costing?

Zero-Based Costing is a methodology in which the expected cost of a component is calculated from its fundamental cost elements rather than simply accepting historical or existing supplier prices.

For an automotive component, the analysis may consider:

  • Raw material cost
  • Material consumption
  • Yield
  • Manufacturing process
  • Cycle time
  • Labour
  • Machine cost
  • Tooling
  • Overheads
  • Packaging
  • Logistics
  • Supplier margin

Zero-Based Costing helps buyers understand whether a supplier quotation is commercially reasonable and provides a strong basis for price negotiation.

4. How would you negotiate with a supplier for cost reduction?

I would first understand the supplier’s cost structure and identify the major cost drivers. Instead of negotiating only on the final quoted price, I would analyze raw material prices, material utilization, manufacturing processes, cycle time, tooling, logistics, overheads, and other relevant factors.

I would then identify opportunities such as material optimization, improved yield, process improvement, localization, VAVE, packaging optimization, and logistics improvements.

A successful negotiation should achieve a competitive cost while maintaining the required quality, delivery, and supplier relationship.

5. What is VAVE and how does it help purchasing?

VAVE stands for Value Analysis/Value Engineering. It focuses on improving the value of a component by optimizing cost while maintaining its required function, performance, quality, and reliability.

For example, a supplier and engineering team may identify an alternative material, simplify a component, reduce the number of parts, improve manufacturing efficiency, or optimize the design.

Purchasing can play an important role by identifying cost drivers, involving capable suppliers, evaluating commercial benefits, and supporting implementation of approved cost-reduction ideas.

6. What is Yield and why is it important in sheet metal and plastic components?

Yield refers to how effectively raw material is converted into usable product while minimizing scrap or material loss.

In sheet metal manufacturing, material utilization is a major cost factor. Improvements in blank layout, nesting, component design, and process planning can reduce scrap and improve material yield.

In plastics, factors such as material consumption, runner design, cycle time, rejection, and process efficiency can influence overall component cost.

A buyer with good costing knowledge should understand how yield affects the supplier’s manufacturing cost and identify opportunities for improvement.

7. What is Milk Run and how does it help automotive supply chains?

Milk Run is a logistics method in which a vehicle follows a planned route and collects materials from multiple suppliers rather than having each supplier independently arrange transportation to the plant.

It can help improve logistics efficiency by increasing vehicle utilization, reducing transportation costs, optimizing delivery frequency, and improving material flow.

For an automotive buyer, understanding logistics concepts such as Milk Run and Cross Docking is important because logistics costs and delivery reliability directly affect the total supply-chain cost and production continuity.

8. How would you handle a supplier who is unable to meet the required delivery schedule?

First, I would understand the actual reason for the delay. The issue could be related to capacity, raw material availability, manpower, tooling, production planning, quality problems, or logistics.

I would work with the supplier to establish a recovery plan and closely monitor the production and dispatch schedule. If necessary, alternative logistics arrangements, additional shifts, capacity enhancement, or temporary alternate sourcing could be evaluated.

The priority would be to protect production continuity while addressing the underlying supplier issue so that the problem does not repeat.

9. How do you conduct a cost-benefit analysis before selecting an alternative supplier?

I would compare the alternatives using both direct and indirect costs.

The analysis could include:

  • Component price
  • Tooling investment
  • Logistics cost
  • Quality cost
  • Development cost
  • Lead time
  • Capacity
  • Localization benefits
  • Payment terms
  • Switching or resourcing costs
  • Long-term cost-reduction potential

The objective is to determine the overall business benefit rather than selecting a supplier solely on quoted component price.

10. Why are you suitable for the AM/DM Buyer Sourcing Job?

A strong candidate should demonstrate a combination of purchasing knowledge, supplier management capability, commercial understanding, and automotive industry experience.

A suitable response could be:

“I have experience in automotive sourcing and supplier management, including supplier development, commercial negotiations, cost analysis, and component development. I understand concepts such as Zero-Based Costing, VAVE, Yield, logistics planning, and supplier capacity assessment. I can effectively coordinate with suppliers and internal teams to achieve cost, quality, delivery, and development targets. I believe these skills make me suitable for the AM/DM Buyer Sourcing Job.”

Candidates should customize this answer according to their actual experience and achievements.
