β QA/QC Engineer Interview Questions and Answers
1. What is the role of a QA/QC Engineer in a manufacturing organization?
Sample Answer:
The QA/QC Engineer ensures that products meet customer requirements, drawings, codes, and QAP. My role includes material inspection, stage and final inspection, documentation, WPS/PQR/WPQ preparation, coordination with TPI, and ensuring compliance with ASME/IBR and customer specifications. I also support root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
2. What is the difference between QA and QC?
Sample Answer:
Quality Assurance is process-oriented and focuses on preventing defects through systems and procedures like QAP, SOP, audits.
Quality Control is product-oriented and focuses on detecting defects through inspection, testing, and verification of finished components.
3. What activities are included under inward inspection?
Sample Answer:
Inward inspection includes verification of material test certificates (MTC), dimensional checks, visual inspection, identification marking, heat number verification, surface condition, and compliance to PO, drawings, and applicable standards.
4. What is QAP?
Sample Answer:
The Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) defines inspection stages, characteristics to be checked, acceptance criteria, responsible authority, frequency of inspection, and required documents. It acts as a roadmap for inspection from raw material to dispatch.
5. What documents do you verify during inward material inspection?
Sample Answer:
Purchase order
Drawing and specifications
Material Test Certificate (MTC)
Heat number / batch number
Compliance to ASME/IBR
Dimensional report
Visual inspection observations
6. What is WPS, PQR, and WPQ?
Sample Answer:
WPS: Welding Procedure Specification β defines how welding must be done.
PQR: Procedure Qualification Record β test record proving the WPS works.
WPQ/WQT: Welder Performance Qualification β certifies a welderβs ability to follow WPS.
7. What are common NDT methods used in fabrication?
Sample Answer:
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT)
Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT/LPT)
Visual Testing (VT)
Hardness testing (where needed)
8. Explain Hydro Test.
Sample Answer:
Hydro testing verifies the strength and leak tightness of pressure equipment by filling it with water and applying pressure above design pressure for a specified time while inspecting leaks and permanent deformation as per code or QAP.
9. What is the code used for pressure vessels?
Sample Answer:
ASME Section VIII Division 1 and Division 2 are primarily used for pressure vessels. They cover design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and documentation requirements.
