Interview Questions & Answers
1. How do you ensure that daily production targets are achieved?
Answer: I start by reviewing the production plan, available capacity, manpower, machine condition and material availability. During the shift, I monitor actual production against the plan and identify bottlenecks immediately. If there is a gap, I coordinate with PPC, Maintenance, Quality and Stores to resolve the issue and recover production without compromising safety or quality.
2. How would you handle a production line that is consistently missing its target?
Answer: I would first analyze the loss using actual production data. I would check cycle time, downtime, manpower availability, material shortages, quality rejection, changeover losses and equipment performance. After identifying the major loss, I would implement a corrective action and monitor the result through daily production KPIs.
3. How do you improve productivity on a shop floor?
Answer: I would identify the major productivity losses and establish a baseline. Improvements can come through line balancing, cycle-time reduction, manpower optimization, reduction of downtime, better material flow, standardized work and Kaizen. I would measure the improvement using actual output, efficiency, OEE and productivity data.
4. What is the role of 5S in production?
Answer: 5S creates an organized, clean and controlled workplace. It improves accessibility, reduces searching and unnecessary movement, highlights abnormalities and supports workplace safety. Sustaining 5S also improves discipline and makes process abnormalities easier to identify.
5. How do you reduce rejection and rework?
Answer: I would first identify the major rejection categories using Pareto analysis. Then I would conduct root-cause analysis using tools such as 5 Why and Fishbone Analysis. Corrective actions should address the actual process cause rather than simply sorting defective parts. After implementation, the results should be monitored to confirm that the problem does not recur.
6. How do you motivate production operators?
Answer: I believe operators need clear standards, proper training, regular feedback and recognition. I would involve operators in Kaizen activities because they often understand the practical problems of the process better than anyone. Creating ownership at the workstation helps improve both productivity and quality.
7. What is your understanding of IATF 16949?
Answer: IATF 16949 is an automotive quality management standard focused on improving product and process quality, reducing variation and preventing defects. In production, this means following standardized processes, maintaining records, controlling process risks and ensuring that corrective actions are effectively implemented.
8. What KPIs would you monitor as a Production Manager?
Answer: Key production KPIs include production achievement, OEE, productivity, cycle time, rejection, rework, downtime, manpower efficiency, line efficiency and on-time production. Safety and quality indicators should also be monitored because production targets should never be achieved by compromising safety or product quality.
9. What would you do if Production and Quality teams disagree about releasing a batch?
Answer: Product quality and customer requirements must take priority. I would review the actual inspection data and applicable standards with the Quality team. The objective would be to understand the issue and find a technically valid solution rather than putting production pressure ahead of quality requirements.
10. How do you conduct a monthly production review?
Answer: I would compare planned versus actual production and review major losses related to quality, downtime, productivity, manpower and delivery. I would present the key gaps using data, identify root causes and assign corrective actions with responsible persons and deadlines. The previous month’s actions should also be reviewed for effectiveness.
