10 Interview Questions & Answers (Highly Relevant)

1. What is the purpose of dyno engine testing?

Answer:
Dyno testing is done to measure engine performance parameters such as power, torque, fuel efficiency, and emissions under controlled conditions. It helps validate engine capability and ensures it meets design specifications.

2. What parameters do you monitor during engine performance testing?

Answer:
Power, torque, temperature, pressure, humidity, oil temperature, oil pressure, coolant temperature, air-fuel ratio, and engine speed (RPM).

3. How do you diagnose performance deviation during testing?

Answer:
By comparing test results with baseline specifications, analyzing graphs/data logs, checking sensor integrity, reviewing test bench setup, inspecting engine health, and validating ambient conditions.

4. What is the difference between PUMA and EDACS software?

Answer:
Both are test automation and data acquisition systems.

  • PUMA is AVL’s platform, widely used for engine test automation.

  • EDACS is ARAI’s/Indian OEM’s engine data acquisition and control system.
They differ in UI, automation capabilities, integration, and reporting formats.

5. How do ambient conditions affect engine performance?

Answer:
Changes in temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure alter air density and combustion efficiency, affecting power, torque, and fuel economy. Dyno labs compensate using correction factors.

6. What standards do you follow for engine testing?

Answer:
IS 1459 (performance), AIS-137 (test procedures), ISO 1585, and OEM-specific test manuals. These define testing conditions, engine preparation, and measurement methods.

7. Describe the steps for preparing an engine on the test bench.

Answer:

  • Mounting the engine on the bench

  • Connecting harnesses & sensors

  • Attaching fuel, coolant, exhaust, and air intake systems

  • Running preliminary calibration

  • Verifying safety & interlocks

  • Starting baseline warm-up cycle

8. How do you ensure repeatability in engine testing?

Answer:
By maintaining controlled environmental conditions, calibrating sensors, following a fixed test protocol, using consistent fuels, proper warm-up, and ensuring benchmark engine health.

9. What common issues cause inconsistent power or torque output?

Answer:
Fuel system issues, incorrect sensor readings, air intake leaks, improper calibration, lubrication problems, or mechanical faults like worn cylinders or valve leakage.

10. What is your experience with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in engine testing?

Answer:
ISO 9001 ensures quality processes, documentation, calibration, and traceability.
ISO 14001 covers environmental impact, emissions handling, and safe disposal in testing facilities.
