TOP 10 Interview Questions & Answers for BMS / Battery Pack Roles

1. What is SOC and how is it estimated?

Answer: SOC (State of Charge) indicates the remaining capacity of a battery. It is estimated using methods like Coulomb counting, OCV mapping, Kalman filtering, and machine-learning-based algorithms.

2. Explain the thermal runaway phenomenon.

Answer: Thermal runaway occurs when the battery temperature rises uncontrollably due to internal short-circuit, overcharging, or cell damage, leading to fire or explosion. Proper thermal management and safety cut-offs are essential to prevent it.

3. What is the difference between a cell, module, and pack?

Answer:

  • Cell: Single electrochemical unit

  • Module: Group of cells connected in series/parallel

  • Pack: Assembly of multiple modules with BMS, cooling, enclosure, wiring

4. What is SOH in batteries?

Answer: SOH (State of Health) measures how much the battery’s capacity and performance have degraded compared to a new battery.

5. How does a BMS ensure battery safety?

Answer: BMS monitors voltage, current, temperature, SOC, SOH, balancing, and provides real-time protection against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, and overheating.

6. What is cell balancing?

Answer: Balancing equalizes the charge across cells to improve battery life. It can be passive (heat dissipation) or active (energy transfer).

7. Why is thermal management important in EV batteries?

Answer: Temperature impacts performance, life cycle, safety, charging speed, and energy density. Thermal management prevents overheating or overcooling.

8. What testing is done for battery packs?

Answer: DVPR testing includes vibration, thermal shock, drop test, cycling, BMS validation, fault injection, and compliance tests (AIS 156, UN38.3).

9. What challenges occur in EV battery pack design?

Answer: Key challenges include thermal stability, packaging constraints, weight optimization, safety, cell selection, and durability.

10. What tools are commonly used in BMS development?

Answer: MATLAB/Simulink, Vector CANoe, CANalyzer, NI LabVIEW, HILS systems, PSpice, Altium Designer.
