Top Interview Questions & Answers for SCM Head β Capital Machinery & Project-Based Manufacturing
1οΈβ£ Tell us about your experience handling Supply Chain in a machinery or capital equipment industry.
I have led end-to-end supply chain functions that include planning, procurement, vendor development, logistics, and inventory management in the machinery/equipment domain. My experience involves working closely with production, design, and project teams to ensure material readiness aligns with customer delivery timelines. I have managed both standard and project-based procurement, which gives me an understanding of customization, lead times, and cost sensitivity unique to the capital machinery industry.
2οΈβ£ How do you approach vendor development and cost optimization?
Vendor development begins with evaluating capability, consistency, quality, and competitiveness. I believe in building a multi-supplier ecosystem to reduce dependency and risk. Cost optimization includes negotiation, long-term agreements, demand consolidation, value engineering, and total landed cost analysisβnot just price cuts. My approach is to build strategic partnerships while ensuring commercial advantage for the organization.
3οΈβ£ What strategies do you use to reduce supply chain delays in project-oriented manufacturing?
The key lies in accurate forecasting, milestone mapping, and continuous tracking. I ensure visibility from purchase request to delivery by integrating planning, purchase, and logistics. Early identification of material constraints, staggered deliveries aligned to project phases, and proactive follow-up with vendors reduce risk of delay. Communication with inter-department teams and maintaining alternate procurement sources is critical in project timelines.
4οΈβ£ How do you ensure effective coordination between procurement, planning, warehouse, and dispatch teams?
I implement structured review meetings, clearly defined ownership matrices, and centralized reporting dashboards. Each teamβs KPI is aligned to common supply chain goals such as cost, delivery, and accuracy. An ERP-driven workflow ensures real-time visibility and avoids communication gaps.
5οΈβ£ Can you explain your experience with ERP or digital tools in SCM?
I have overseen implementation and usage of ERP systems for RFQ creation, purchase orders, GRN, vendor tracking, inventory records, and dispatch documentation. Digital tools such as planning modules and automated dashboards help reduce manual errors and improve decision-making efficiency.
6οΈβ£ How do you manage inventory to avoid both excess stock and shortages?
Through the combination of demand forecasting, safety stock planning, minimum-maximum levels, and vendor lead-time mapping, I ensure a balanced inventory. I advocate for regular stock reviews, ABC & FSN analysis, and aligning procurement schedules with production cycles.
7οΈβ£ Describe a situation where you resolved a major supply chain challenge.
I successfully resolved a critical downtime risk by redesigning the procurement approach for long lead components. By developing two alternate suppliers, negotiating staggered delivery, and improving internal planning accuracy, we prevented project delays and reduced procurement cost without quality compromise.
8οΈβ£ How do you build and lead high-performing SCM teams?
My leadership approach includes empowerment, clarity of responsibilities, continuous training, and regular feedback. I define measurable KPIs aligned to team strengths and organizational goals. I encourage cross-functional exposure to enhance capability and make the supply chain more agile.
9οΈβ£ What role does supplier relationship management play in SCM success?
Effective supplier relationships ensure reliability, transparency, improved negotiation, quality consistency, and crisis management. Long-term partnerships supported by performance data, joint problem-solving, and clear expectations lead to sustainable supply chain success.
π Why do you believe you are a good fit for the SCM Head role at Sona Machinery?
I bring hands-on experience, a strategic mindset, and a record of driving supply chain improvements in project-based engineering businesses. My approach focuses on cost control, capability building, and operational excellence. With a leadership style that blends accountability and support, I can drive the SCM function to support Sona Machineryβs growth objectives.
