Interview Questions & Answers
Quality Engineer – Moulding (Plastic Manufacturing)
1. What are the most common plastic moulding defects you have handled?
Answer:
Common plastic moulding defects include short shot, flash, sink marks, warpage, burn marks, flow lines, silver streaks, black spots, and voids. I have handled these defects by analyzing process parameters such as injection pressure, temperature, cooling time, mould condition, and raw material quality, followed by corrective actions.
2. How do you identify the root cause of a recurring moulding defect?
Answer:
I use structured problem-solving methods like 8D and A3. First, I collect defect data, observe the process on the shopfloor, and review machine parameters. I then perform root cause analysis using 5 Why and Fishbone diagram, followed by corrective and preventive actions and validation.
3. What is your experience with in-process quality control in plastic moulding?
Answer:
I regularly monitor critical process parameters, conduct in-process inspections, verify first-off and last-off samples, and ensure adherence to control plans. I also coordinate with production teams to prevent defects at early stages rather than relying only on final inspection.
4. Explain the 8D methodology and its importance in quality.
Answer:
8D is a structured problem-solving approach used to identify, correct, and prevent recurring issues. It includes steps such as team formation, problem description, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and prevention. It is important because it ensures systematic resolution and customer satisfaction.
5. What checks are performed during final inspection of plastic parts?
Answer:
Final inspection includes dimensional checks, visual inspection for surface defects, functional testing if applicable, verification against drawings, and documentation of results. Any non-conforming parts are segregated and reported for corrective action.
6. How do you handle manpower on the shopfloor from a quality perspective?
Answer:
I ensure quality inspectors and operators are properly trained on inspection standards, defect identification, and work instructions. I also conduct regular briefings, audits, and retraining to maintain quality awareness and discipline.
7. What documents are important in a plastic moulding quality system?
Answer:
Key documents include control plans, inspection standards, process flow diagrams, SOPs, defect analysis reports, 8D/A3 reports, and quality records for traceability and audits.
8. How do you ensure compliance with quality standards and audits?
Answer:
I follow documented procedures, maintain proper records, conduct internal audits, close audit findings on time, and ensure continuous improvement. I also prepare teams for audits by reinforcing quality practices and documentation discipline.
9. How do you deal with production pressure when quality is at risk?
Answer:
I prioritize quality over quantity. If there is a risk of defect generation, I immediately communicate with production and stop the process if necessary. I believe preventive actions save cost and time compared to rework and customer complaints.
10. Why should we hire you as a Quality Engineer – Moulding?
Answer:
I have hands-on experience in plastic moulding quality, defect analysis, in-process control, and problem-solving methods like 8D and A3. I can handle shopfloor quality challenges, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and ensure consistent product quality.
