Engineer / Senior Engineer – Maintenance (Automotive Industry)

1. Can you explain your maintenance experience in an automotive plant?

Answer:
I have 8–10 years of experience handling maintenance activities in an automotive manufacturing environment. My role included preventive, breakdown, and predictive maintenance for production equipment, utilities, and automation systems. I have supported uninterrupted production by minimizing downtime and improving equipment reliability.


2. What types of machines and equipment have you maintained?

Answer:
I have worked on CNC machines, hydraulic presses, injection molding machines, conveyors, robotic cells, welding machines, compressors, chillers, and utility systems. I am also familiar with PLC-controlled systems and sensor-based automation used in automotive plants.


3. How do you plan preventive maintenance?

Answer:
Preventive maintenance is planned based on machine manuals, historical breakdown data, and OEM recommendations. I prepare monthly and weekly PM schedules, ensure checklist execution, track spare usage, and verify machine health through vibration, temperature, and lubrication checks.


4. How do you handle machine breakdowns during production?

Answer:
I follow a systematic approach—first ensuring safety, then identifying the root cause using tools like 5 Why analysis. I coordinate with production teams, arrange spares quickly, restore the machine, and later implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.


5. What is your experience with TPM or continuous improvement?

Answer:
I have experience implementing TPM pillars like Autonomous Maintenance, Planned Maintenance, and Kaizen activities. I regularly train operators on basic machine care and participate in improvement projects to reduce MTTR and increase OEE.


6. How do you manage spare parts and inventory?

Answer:
I maintain critical spare lists, monitor consumption trends, and ensure minimum stock levels. I coordinate with purchase teams for timely procurement and maintain proper documentation to avoid production loss due to spare shortages.


7. Have you handled utilities maintenance?

Answer:
Yes, I have handled utilities such as compressors, DG sets, cooling towers, HVAC, boilers, and water treatment systems. I ensure energy efficiency, compliance, and uninterrupted supply to production lines.


8. How do you ensure safety during maintenance work?

Answer:
Safety is my top priority. I strictly follow LOTO procedures, PPE usage, and work permits. I also conduct safety toolbox talks and ensure technicians follow standard operating procedures during maintenance activities.


9. Do you have experience leading a maintenance team?

Answer:
Yes, I have handled technician teams, allocated daily work, monitored performance, and provided technical guidance. I also conduct training sessions to improve team skill levels and efficiency.


10. How do you reduce maintenance costs?

Answer:
I focus on preventive maintenance, root cause analysis, vendor negotiations, spare standardization, and condition-based monitoring. These practices help reduce breakdowns, spare wastage, and external service costs.


11. What maintenance KPIs do you track?

Answer:
I track KPIs such as machine downtime, MTBF, MTTR, maintenance cost per machine, PM compliance, and OEE improvement metrics.


12. How do you handle audits and documentation?

Answer:
I maintain maintenance logs, PM checklists, calibration records, breakdown history, and safety documents. I have supported ISO and internal audits by ensuring compliance and proper documentation.


13. What is your approach to root cause analysis?

Answer:
I use tools like 5 Why, Fishbone Diagram, and Pareto analysis. After identifying the root cause, I implement permanent corrective actions and validate effectiveness through monitoring.
